Achieving the Highest Resolution Protein Structure Through Advanced X-Ray Diffraction Techniques
Through Advanced X-Ray Diffraction Techniques , researchers have determined the structure of the protein rubredoxin at 0.43 Ångström resolution, marking the highest resolution ever achieved for a protein structure.
Modern Macromolecular crystallography (MX) relies on a foundation of trusted, highly optimized software to translate raw diffraction images into meaningful structural biology insights. For decades, XDS - the software program developed by Wolfgang Kabsch - has served as a critical component in this workflow. Max Planck Innovation and Wolfgang Kabsch have chosen to entrust DECTRIS with the long-term stewardship, distribution, and support of XDS through an exclusive licensing agreement. Through this transition, DECTRIS ensures that (a) XDS remains freely available to academic researchers without
DECTRIS Japan Announces Leadership Transition: Leonard Chavas Appointed as Representative Director
HIMEJI, JAPAN | April 2026 – DECTRIS Japan K.K., a subsidiary of the global leader in Hybrid Photon Counting (HPC) detector technology, DECTRIS Ltd., today announces a change in its executive leadership. Dr. Takeyoshi Taguchi has stepped down as Representative Director, with Dr. Leonard Chavas appointed as his successor to lead the company into its next phase of growth.
White Paper: Advancing Scattering Experiments with Hybrid Photon Counting Detectors
This white paper explores how DECTRIS’s Hybrid Photon Counting detectors enhance SAXS and WAXS experiments, enabling high-resolution, low-noise data collection in both synchrotron and laboratory environments.
High-Energy PXRD Experiments Empowered by the PILATUS4 CdTe Detector
We are proud to share that our article—“Enhancing high‑energy powder X‑ray diffraction applications using a PILATUS4 CdTe detector” (Donath et al. J. Synchr. Rad. 2025, 32, 378) has been published. This study was conducted in collaboration with scientists at the MAX IV Laboratory (Sweden) and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, France). Using the new PILATUS4 CdTe detector, we pushed the limits of resolution, speed, and performance in high-energy PXRD.
Real Synchrotron Beamline Integration Stories: DECTRIS CLOUD White Paper Now Available
After three successful commissioning experiments at EMBL, ALS, and MAX IV, a white paper outlines how DECTRIS CLOUD can be integrated into synchrotron facility beamlines.
Interview with Leonard Chavas: Empowering Science Through Cutting Edge Technology
Structural biology is a field where precision meets discovery, and few understand this better than Leonard Chavas. He has been at the forefront of structural biology at synchrotrons for 25 years. As of April 1, 2025, he joins DECTRIS Japan as a sales manager. We sat down with him to discuss his journey, motivations, and vision for the future.

Fusion Record Set for Tungsten at WEST Tokamak by U.S. Researchers with Swiss PILATUS X-Ray Detector
Baden, May 6, 2024 – Researchers at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) of the U.S. Department of Energy have set a new fusion record using PILATUS3 detectors provided by DECTRIS. The record was set at WEST, the Tungsten (W) Environment in Steady-state Tokamak; the fusion device sustained a hot plasma at about 50 million degrees Celsius for six minutes. DECTRIS is proud to be part of this success, which highlights the key role of public-private partnerships, as well as that of Swiss technology based on Hybrid Photon Counting, in advancing energy research. Finally, the record was mad
Celebrating Our Global Impact In Life Sciences and Drug Development On World’s Health Day
April 7, 2024 BADEN, April 7, 2024 - On the World Health Day, we commemorate the global impact of our technology, enabling structural biologists worldwide to make important breakthroughs in public health. Since the first PILATUS X-ray detector revolutionized biological research at synchrotron light sources over fifteen years ago, progress in life sciences, drug discovery and drug development accelerated, including the development of vaccines. This faster, more structure-based approach to do biological research led to many important discoveries. As a pioneering technique in Structural Biology,
Today at DECTRIS, we celebrate UNESCO’s fifth World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development. We highlight the critical roles of our engineers in building high-performing detectors to advance science and progress toward a sustainable future. At DECTRIS, we have more than ten Engineering specializations across the whole product life cycle. Over 50 highly specialized and skilled engineers are actively involved in the process. They develop software, electronic circuits, and mechanical and IT solutions; they bring in expertise during production; and, finally, they commission our detectors in re
